Course Descriptions List

Managing skin and soft tissue infections is a core skill in urgent care, emergency, and primary care settings—but for many clinicians, performing an incision and drainage can feel intimidating without proper training and practice.

This workshop is designed for physicians, nurse practitioners, and physician assistants seeking to build or reinforce their I&D skills in a supportive, hands-on environment. No prior procedural experience is required.

We start by covering the essential clinical reasoning behind I&D procedures:

How to recognize abscesses that require intervention

When to treat conservatively vs. when to perform I&D

Anatomical considerations and red flags to avoid complications

You'll get hands-on training in:

Proper anesthesia techniques for abscess management

Step-by-step incision and drainage technique

Wound exploration and irrigation

Packing vs. non-packing strategies

Post-procedure care and patient instructions

Through guided instruction and one-on-one feedback, you’ll gain the technical skills and clinical confidence needed to safely and effectively manage abscesses in your practice. The course uses realistic simulation models that mimic abscess tissue and allow you to practice in a no-pressure setting.

Whether you’re a new clinician or looking to expand your procedural skill set, this workshop gives you practical tools you can apply immediately in the clinic.

About the Course

This workshop is your gateway to developing essential wound closure skills in a supportive, interactive environment. Designed specifically for physicians, nurse practitioners, and physician assistants with little to no prior suturing experience, Suture Fundamentals lays the groundwork for safe, effective, and confident wound management in clinical practice.

You’ll start by learning the fundamentals of wound assessment—how to evaluate depth, location, contamination risk, and tissue viability to determine the most appropriate closure approach. We’ll walk through how to choose the right local anesthetic based on the clinical scenario, and you’ll get practical experience in administering it correctly and comfortably.

The hands-on portion of the course focuses on the techniques you’ll use most often in urgent care, primary care, emergency, and procedural settings. You’ll learn:

	Simple interrupted sutures

	Continuous sutures

	Subcuticular sutures

	Skin stapling techniques

This isn’t a lecture-style course—we prioritize individualized attention and plenty of practice time on high-quality training models. Whether you're preparing for a new role, refreshing a long-unused skill, or building a foundation for more advanced procedures, this workshop gives you the tools and confidence to succeed.

By the end of the day, you’ll leave with a clear understanding of wound closure principles and the hands-on experience to start using them right away.
